What is Medical Massage?
The term "medical massage" is commonly used to describe different manual therapy techniques to treat medical conditions or injuries diagnosed by a physician using an "Assess-Treat-Reassess" approach. In the rising opioids epidemic, the CDC recommends medical massage as an alternative to pain management and relief.
What types of techniques does it involve?
Medical massage involve techniques like trigger point therapy--the application of pressure on specific points in the body that may feel tied or knotted in order to release tension. Some pain and discomfort may be felt when dealing with trigger points.
Another technique is neuromuscular therapy, which is based on the premise that overuse or underuse of certain muscles cause musculoskeletal imbalances. This massage technique aims to balance the nervous and musculoskeletal systems in the body.
Sports massage techniques may include lymphatic drainage, deep tissue massage, stretching, trigger point in a specifically designed treatment for athletes to target the overuse or misuse of muscles, which create muscle imbalances.
The fascia is an elastic tissue surrounding muscles, bones, and other structures in the body. Myofascial massage involves applying gentle or moderate pressure to the fascia in order to release any tension created by injury, chronic tension or other factors.
The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and nodes that help remove waste and reduce swelling from the body, making it a crucial part of the immune system. Manual lymphatic drainage targets this system helping with post workout recovery, allergy congestion, bloating or overall tension.

How is it different from a relaxing spa massage?
A spa massage is commonly performed for the purpose of relaxation and stress relief. Some types of spa massage include Swedish massage, hot stone, aromatherapy, but they are not used to treat chronic conditions or injuries.
Although medical massage can be stress reducing, it is more targeted in its approach, seeking to find pain relief for the patient.
It is important to note that there is no specific "medical massage technique" but that it is an umbrella term used to encompass a variety of techniques utilized for the purpose of treating conditions based of the client's needs, health history, and diagnosis.

Why Pilates and Medical Massage?
At Cords of Love, we believe (and have seen) that massage, when applied intentionally with the correct tools and techniques, can treat a number of chronic conditions and injuries. We also find that through the activation of muscles through Pilates, the muscles are strengthened and returned to their original state leading to longer lasting relief.
